Sometimes we choose courage, and sometimes courage chooses us. Few people know this better than Jamie Dorn-Lane. As a child, Jamie was very introverted, so when she made bold moves that put her in front of crowded rooms, it always brought a feeling of great accomplishment. Her courage began with dance recitals and continued through her time at Washington State University, when she applied to become part of their ‘Cougar Connection’ program, which required traveling throughout the state as a public speaker to recruit other students. Less than a dozen students per year were chosen for this honor, and she felt proud of that achievement, even though it was surely against her nature.
Jamie grew up in California, and through the years, she would display even more courage as she went on a cross-country journey, moving to places where she knew absolutely no one. Her first move was to Washington State to attend college, then to Florida, and finally settling in Tennessee. After graduating with an Advertising degree from Washington State University, she joined a Public Relations firm. She enjoyed the people, but not the politics, so when a friend suggested she try property management, she gave it a shot. That position led her to get her real estate license, and eventually work for a builder in a 55+ community in Florida, which she instantly loved.
In 2015, she made the boldest move yet, and opened her own brokerage. Because she had experienced so many moves and major lifestyle changes herself, she knew she was best suited to work with people who needed guidance doing the same. And the best part was, her Mom, Niki, decided to join the brokerage as well, and contribute her own life experience as a leader, mentor, and active retiree. Together, they could help people who were approaching or in retirement so they could list or locate a home and lifestyle to better suit their changing needs. That’s how they became known as the Lifestyle Locators®. It was another example of Jamie choosing courage. But now, courage would choose her.
In 2018, in the midst of a very successful run in real estate, Jamie began having serious health issues. After multiple doctors had told her it was all in her head, she found out she had a massive tumor. In October of that same year, she underwent a difficult surgery called a ‘Whipple’ procedure to remove the tumor. She was living in Florida at the time, and decided shortly afterward to move to Tennessee so she could have access to better medical care. Today, she focuses on the positive and her personality shines so much that virtually all of her clients have adopted her as family.

When Jamie isn’t helping her clients locate the lifestyle of their dreams, she’s living hers. She enjoys spending time with her husband, Chris, and their dog, Norman. They love football, and their favorite team is the Seattle Seahawks. They’re also excited to be in a college town again, and looking forward to supporting the Tennessee Volunteers. She enjoys working and even traveling with her Mom to explore new places together. She continues to choose courage daily, but not just for herself. She understands what’s involved in a major life change, and she proudly helps her clients to locate their own bold, new home and lifestyle
“Before you are a leader, success is about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” This quote from Jack Welch sums up what Niki Dorn’s life represents. From a young age, she learned to depend on herself, and as she grew, others would depend on her as a leader and mentor.
Niki grew up in Wyoming, the second of four children. Her Mom was in the Army in WWII, which shaped her life in two poignant ways. First, she became the mother figure in the family, which taught her independence and self reliance. Second, her Mom’s service inspired her to join the AirForce after high school graduation, which was how she ended up in California.
She decided to further her education after four years of service, and went to college on the GI bill. After graduating, she began a career in public accounting, and opened her own CPA firm. She later became the Director of Payroll at the University of Washington, where she was trained in teambuilding and was responsible for maintaining a large budget. She embraced this responsibility, and even began to mentor many people into higher job levels, including two peers who became directors in subsequent companies.
After a long career in the financial industry, she moved to Florida to be with her daughter, Jamie, and settled into a 55+ community. The community had a Veteran’s Club of 300+ members with less than a dozen women, and Niki soon became their first and only female commander. She held this position for two years, when most commanders had only served for one. This was an intimidating venture for Niki at first, because men generally led over women in the service, but her leadership roles and mentoring had positioned her well for the task, and her work was admired and appreciated by all.
Her daughter, Jamie, had started her own real estate brokerage and desperately needed some help. She began fielding calls and meeting clients, and it quickly became apparent that she was a perfect fit for real estate. Being a baby boomer, a single woman and someone who had suffered the tragic loss of a loved one, it was natural for her to work with other women, as well as Veterans, who were undergoing major lifestyle changes. Since that time, she has been able to help so many single women through the buying or selling process after a recent divorce or the death of a spouse. Niki knows they deserve their perfect lifestyle, too, and that’s one reason she and Jamie have become known as the Lifestyle Locators®.
Today, Niki and Jamie own Blue Vista Realty, a brokerage designed to help people who are approaching or in retirement so they can list or locate a home and lifestyle to better suit their changing needs. They’re recognized for working with 50+ active retirees and seniors who need a low maintenance lifestyle with a sense of community. Her favorite pastime is boating, and she plans to explore photography as a serious hobby, no doubt to capture all the life changing moments she witnesses through helping people make life changing moves. Her journey is proof that once you become a leader or mentor, those roles never leave you. And you leave behind a legacy of loyalty and inspiration.
